Big West At A Glance

LBSU Men Opened Spring Season With Tournament Win:
Long Beach State posted an 8-over 872 at the  Folino Invitational, hosted by Cal State Fullerton, to win the team title by two shots over UC Santa Barbara and 15 strokes over UC Irvine in third.  This was the first team title for the Beach this season.  Redshirt sophomore Joe Fryer fired a 7-under 209 to capture individual medalist honors  for the first time in his career.

Cal Poly Claims Team Title:
The Cal Poly women’s golf team, trailing Hawai’i by five strokes after Monday’s two rounds of play, overtook the Rainbow Wahine and captured first place in the Battle at the Rock hosted by UC Riverside at the Oak Quarry Golf Club.  Second-year coach Sofie Aagaard’s Mustangs carded a three-round score of 904 to claim Cal Poly’s 19th team championship since the women’s golf program was launched in the fall of 2000 and the second for Aagaard’s program this season. The Mustangs claimed the Hobble Creek Fall Classic in Springville, Utah, last September.

CSF’s Edberg Rises In National Rankings:
After a pair of impressive performances to kick off the spring season, combined with her stellar fall season, Cal State Fullerton’s Martina Edberg has climbed to 27th in the Golfweek individual rankings.  Posting top-3 finishes in all six tournaments during the 2016-17 season, she currently paces the Big West Conference with a 71. 4 stroke average.

Four top-three finishes among Smith and Edberg netted them Big West Golfer of the Month:
UC Santa Barbara junior Zach Smith shot par or better in six of nine rounds over three tournaments. He carded a 2-under 214 en route to a runner-up finish at the Folino Invitational.  Smith then helped the Gauchos win the Pro Compression Invitational in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., the program’s second of the season.  Smith, who actually led the field of 68 competitors through 36 holes, fired a 4-over 76 over the final 18.  However, he collected back-to-back sub-70 rounds of 66 and 68 to position himself for medalist honors.  He ended up in a tie for third.

At the UC Riverside-hosted Battle at the Rock, Cal State Fullerton senior Martina Edberg finished runner-up in an 84-player field after carding a 5-over 221 at Oak Quarry Golf Club.  She tallied rounds of 73, 73 and 75 as the Titans placed 10th in the tournament.  Edberg then went up against 17 other individuals, who, like her, were ranked in the top-50 rankings at the Bruin Wave Invitational in San Luis Obispo, Calif.  She excelled against the competition on the 6,323-yard, par-73 course with an aggregate score of 1-over 220 after rounds of 76, 70 and 74.  Edberg finished just one stroke back of the medalist – Lilia Vu of UCLA.
