Smith, Edberg Capture February Golfer of the Month Honors

Four top-three finishes among Zach Smith and Martina Edberg netted them Big West Golfer of the Month honors for February.

Smith Helps UC Santa Barbara to Second Team Title

UC Santa Barbara junior Zach Smith (Pleasanton, Calif./Amador Valley HS) recorded a pair of top-three individual finishes and helped his squad to a team championship in earning Big West Men’s Golfer of the Month for February.

Smith shot par or better in six of nine rounds over three tournaments.

He carded a 2-under 214 en route to a runner-up finish at the Folino Invitational.  Smith was one of just two players to shoot below par for the tournament on the 7,211-yard Industry Hills Golf Club course.  Smith recorded consecutive rounds of 71 before posting a 72 on his last 18.

Smith then helped the Gauchos win the Pro Compression Invitational in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., the program’s second of the season.  UCSB also won the Bill Cullum Invitational in the fall.  Smith, who actually led the field of 68 competitors through 36 holes, fired a 4-over 76 over the final 18.  However, he collected back-to-back sub-70 rounds of 66 and 68 to position himself for medalist honors.  He ended up in a tie for third.

At the Del Walker Invitational hosted by Long Beach State, Smith helped the Gauchos tie for fifth out of 15 teams.  He posted rounds of 76, 70 and 71 for a 7-over 217.  He tied for 17th overall to tie with teammate Brandon Bauman for top team scoring honors.

Others nominated: Jack Ireland (Cal State Fullerton); Felix Mory (CSUN); Joe Fryer (Long Beach State); Ben Corfee (UC Davis); David Kim (UC Irvine); Sam Gillis (UC Riverside)

Edberg Claims Third Straight Golfer of the Month Award

The layoff from fall to spring did not affect Cal State Fullerton senior Martina Edberg (Glumskov, Sweden/Klippans Gymnasieskola), as consecutive second-place finishes in February led to her third straight selection as Big West Women’s Golfer of the Month.

It is Edberg’s fifth career Golfer of the Month award.  She won in March 2014, March 2016, and then back-to-back last fall in September and October.

Edberg’s accomplishments in her final season as a Titan include a top-3 finish in all six tournaments she has played.

At the UC Riverside-hosted Battle at the Rock, Edberg finished runner-up in an 84-player field after carding a 5-over 221 at Oak Quarry Golf Club.  She tallied rounds of 73, 73 and 75 as the Titans placed 10th in the tournament.

Edberg then went up against 17 other individuals, who, like her, were ranked in the top-50 rankings at the Bruin Wave Invitational in San Luis Obispo, Calif.

She excelled against the competition on the 6,323-yard, par-73 course with an aggregate score of 1-over 220 after rounds of 76, 70 and 74.  Edberg finished just one stroke back of the medalist – Lilia Vu of UCLA.  She finished the tournament with eight birdies, third-most among the 80 participants.

Edberg’s 2016-17 season has included three medalist finishes.

Others nominated: Desiree Gillaspy (Cal Poly); Haley Tygret (Long Beach State); Yoonhee Kim (UC Davis); Avery French (UC Irvine)
