Cal State Fullerton Seeks To Extend Nine-Match Win Streak

3/2/2017

Big West Tennis Release No. 8

Cal State Fullerton aims to lengthen its school record nine-match winning streak as the undefeated Titans invade UC Irvine for a conference match.

BIG WEST AT A GLANCE

Cal State Fullerton Looks To Extend School Record Streak
Cal State Fullerton improved to 9-0 after knocking off Loyola Marymount and Eastern Michigan last week.  The Titans have set school records for best start to a season as well as longest winning streak.  The streak could reach double-digits when the Titans travel to UC Irvine on Thursday for a conference battle.  The Anteaters picked up their first win of the season on Feb. 20 when they toppled Portland State, 4-3.  CSF returns home on Sunday to face Seton Hall in a non-conference tilt.

Hawai‘i Races Out To 4-0 Big West Start
Hawai‘i continued its strong start to 2017 with a sixth consecutive victory, defeating UC Riverside 7-0 on Wednesday.  That came on the heels of a dramatic 4-3 triumph over three-time defending regular season champion Long Beach State last week.  The Rainbow Wahine snapped an LBSU 30-match win streak over Big West opponents in the regular season.  The Beach entered that match without a loss in conference play since Mar. 30, 2013.  The win underlined the level of competitiveness in the Big West as UH (7-2), LBSU (5-2) and Cal State Fullerton (9-0) have had great starts.  So has UC Davis (9-3), which plays three straight home matches this weekend.  Don’t count out UC Santa Barbara (4-6) either.  The Gauchos  have four losses to top 20 programs and fell to No. 34 Washington on the road last week.

Men’s Trio Excelling In Non-Conference Play
Cal Poly, UC Santa Barbara and UC Davis continue to make a strong impression on the collegiate tennis world as the midpoint of the 2017 season approaches.  The Mustangs, ranked No. 39 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll this week, took No. 12 USC down to the wire last week.  Cal Poly nearly pulled off the upset in a 4-3 loss to the Trojans, the program’s best ever showing against that opponent.  Likewise, UC Santa Barbara nearly topped a giant of its own.  The Gauchos fell 4-3 at No. 6 California on Sunday.  Prior to that, UCSB had won five of its first six matches.  UC Davis improved to 6-4 with a 4-3 victory at Fresno State, its fifth win in the last six matches.  The Aggies have played six matches that have been determined by 4-3 scores.

This Week’s Schedule
Three Big West women’s tennis matches are on tap this week – Cal State Fullerton at UC Irvine, Long Beach State at UC Irvine, and Cal Poly at UC Davis.  It is the conference opener for the Anteaters.

The men’s schedule features a marquee match as UC Santa Barbara hosts No. 21 Oregon.  In addition, Cal Poly travels to Stockton to play in the Pacific Mountain Invitational, an eight-team tournament on Saturday and Sunday.

ITA Rankings Recognize Big West Players

The most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association singles and doubles rankings of Feb. 21 features the UC Santa Barbara tandem of Simon Freund and Morgan Mays rising all the way No. 8 nationally in doubles.  The Cal Poly duo of Ben Donovan and Corey Pang is ranked No. 35 in doubles.  Donovan is also No. 57 singles, while UC Irvine senior Sebastian Heim is No. 99.  Two Gaucho women’s doubles teams are ranked – No. 41 Melissa Baker and Stephanie Yamada, along with No. 52 Palina Dubavets and Stefani Stojic.  Dubavets also owns a national singles ranking of No. 113.
