Judi Garman Classic Highlights Tournament Slate
Big West Softball Weekly Release No. 4
The highly anticipated Judi Garman Classic takes place this weekend, highlighting a schedule that features five tournaments stretching from the islands of Hawai'i to the lands of Utah.
AROUND THE BIG WEST
WHAT A LINEUP
The 36th edition of the Judi Garman Classic will as usual have an impressive lineup of teams. Seven ranked teams will take part in #1 Florida, #7 Washington, #7 UCLA #14 Michigan, #18 California, #20 Arizona State and #22 Baylor. The host Titans will have a difficult schedule at the tourney as they play the Sun Devils, Wolverines, Bruins and Bears...the Baylor ones.
IN GOOD HANDS
Some may think that Cal Poly has only one ace, but junior Lindsey Chalmers is providing the club with brillant numbers in the circle. Chalmers is 4-2 with a 0.90 ERA in 31.0 innings. She also has struck out 38 and has allowed just 14 hits. Chalmers has teamed with senior Sierra Hyland (4-4, 1.63 ERA, 68 K) to form the top pitching combo in the league.
SUPPLYING THE BOOM
Cal State Fullerton senior Alexis Gonzalez has emerged as the top power hitter for the Titans. Gonzalez is batting .405 with three home runs and 13 RBI, as well as showing a good eye with 12 walks and just seven strikeouts in 56 plate appearances. On the Big West leaderboard, she leads the league in doubles (6), on-base percentage (.566), slugging (.811), home runs, total bases and walks, while tying for the lead in homers and ranking second in batting average.
Cal State Fullerton senior Kelsey Kessler has filled the role of ace for the Titans in her first year with the program. Kessler is 5-2 with a 2.17 ERA in 48.1 innings of work, striking out 54, and allowing less than a hit per inning. Kessler has performed the best against the biggest clubs, going the distance against Mississippi State and alowing just nine hits and one run in a victory as well as a complete game, two-hit, nine-strikeout gem in a 1-0 win over #17 Utah.
SLICK FIELDING MAKENNA
Sophomore Makenna Young has been as sure handed as they come in the early part of the season. In a league-high 119 chances, Young has not committed an error as she has recorded 111 putouts and eight assists.
THREE CANDIDATES FOR SENIOR CLASS AWARD
Three Big West softball players are among the 30 student-athletes selected as candidates for the 2017 Senior CLASS award it was announced. CSUN has two of the candidates as Taylor Glover and Daphne Pofek garnered acclaim. The other selection is Christina Clermont of Long Beach State. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
TAYLOR, HYLAND NAMED TO POY WATCHLIST
The top 50 “Watch List” for the 2017 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year was announced and two Big West players were included in the list for the prestigious honor.
The senior duo of CSUN’s Taylor Glover and Cal Poly’s Sierra Hyland garnered mention, kickstarting a process that will culiminate in the Player of the Year announcement in late May.
