Wade, Nguyen Named Tennis Athletes of the Week

2/15/2017

A pair of seniors posted impressive singles victories to nab this week's tennis honors.

Wade Fuels Aggie Success In San Diego

Helping UC Davis defeat San Diego and San Diego State in inaugural meetings on the road, senior James Wade (San Marino, Calif./San Marino HS) captured his third career Big West Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week award.

Wade won the three-set clincher at No. 3 singles that gave the Aggies a 4-3 win over the Aztecs.  He dispatched Sander Gjoels-Andersen by a score of 7-5, 4-6, 7-5.  In another 4-3 triumph over the Toreros, his 6-2, 6-2 win against Josh Page tied the match at 2-all.

Wade also teamed with Bryce McKelvie to win a pair of doubles contests, including a 7-6 triumph at the top spot that gave UC Davis the doubles point and an early lead versus SDSU.  He also took USC’s Thibault Forget to three sets, falling 6-1, 2-6, 10-4 in a 6-1 defeat to the ninth-ranked Trojans.

Others nominated: Ben Donovan (Cal Poly); Luis Lopez (UC Irvine); Simon Freund (UC Santa Barbara)

Nguyen Leads Hawai‘i To 2-0 Conference Start

After entering the national singles rankings at No. 96, Hawai‘i senior Cindy Nguyen (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan HS) supported that achievement with a pair of dominant singles wins against conference opponents, earning her a sixth career Big West Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week honor.

She is now tied for fourth all-time in Big West history with the six citations.  Nguyen was instrumental in UH’s wins over CSUN (4-0) and UC Davis (6-1), as she defeated Skyla Alcon (6-2, 6-3) and Kristy Jorgensen (6-1, 6-3). She and partner Klara Pribylova also won a doubles match against the Aggie pairing of Isabella von Ebbe and Kristina Breisacher.

Others nominated: Alexis Valenzuela (Cal State Fullerton); Lena Pacholski (Long Beach State); Stefani Stojic (UC Santa Barbara)
