Hyland Takes Home USA Softball National Player Of The Week Honors
Cal Poly pitcher Sierra Hyland earned another accolade after her stellar season-opening weekend, taking home National Player of the Week honors from USA Softball.
This marks the second USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Week award for Hyland, who previously earned the honor in Week 3 of the 2016 season.
The senior started off her season with a nine-strikeout no-hitter in a 2-1 victory over Purdue. Then against San Diego, she held down the Toreros in relief to earn her school-record tying fifth career save.
Hyland then returned for her next start, an 8-0 run-rule triumph versus Creighton. She twirled her second career perfect game and fifth career no-hitter with nine strikeouts in five innings.
Hyland fanned five more hitters and earned her third victory of the tournament, shutting down Western Michigan for two innings in a 2-1 triumph. Her only setback came in a pitcher’s duel to No. 9 Oregon. Hyland allowed three runs and six hits in a complete game 3-1 loss.
For the week, Hyland struck out 31 batters in 23.0 innings, allowing just nine hits, five runs (three earned) and five walks while posting an 0.91 ERA. The strikeouts over the weekend increased her career total 721, ranking her sixth in Big West history.
