Mays, Melounova Notch First Tennis Weekly Honors of 2017


A veteran player and a newcomer to the collegiate scene captured the first Big West Tennis Athlete of the Week honors for the 2017 season.

Mays Helps UC Santa Barbara to 2-0 Start

UC Santa Barbara senior Morgan Mays (Malibu, Calif./Wake Forest) went undefeated in his opening matches of the 2017 season, garnering the initital Big West Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week award.

Mays went 2-0 in singles and 1-0 in doubles with partner Simon Freund as the Gauchos knocked off San Diego State and Hawai‘i by identical 7-0 scores in Honolulu.

Mays defeated Aztec counterpart Marko Goles-Babic, 6-3, 7-6, at No. 2 singles.  He then moved up to No. 1 singles against Rainbow Warrior Felix Albert and won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4.  At No. 1 doubles, Mays and Freund teamed up to topple Albert and Ruben Blattner of UH by a 6-0 margin.

Melounova Wins Three Singles Matches

Petra Melounova (Havlickuv Brod, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Havlickuv Brod) began the spring season for Hawai‘i with three singles victories to secure Big West Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week accolades.

Melounova took on three opponents at the UH Spring Invitational, and won twice.  She dispatched Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum of Kansas in a tight three-setter, 7-6 (4), 5-7, 6-1, and breezed past Washington State’s Guzal Yusupova, 6-3, 6-0.

In dual match play, she helped the Rainbow Wahine pull out a 4-3 victory with her triumph at No. 1 singles.  She defeated Carolina Costamagna by a 7-6 (3), 6-3 score.  Melounova also won her doubles match against Kansas State with partner Roxanne Resma.
