UC DAVIS KICKS OFF 2017 SEASON
UC Davis opens the 2017 season this weekend at the LouStrong Memorial tournament at San Jose State. The Aggies return 2016 All-Big West honorees in senior Bryn Lutz who was named to the second team a year ago along with Hannah Harvey and Carla Tocchini who received honorable mention recognition. While UCD is the only Big west squad to kick of the new season this weekend, the Aggies will face Stanford to open the 2017 campaign. The Cardinal finished last season ranked No. 2 in the nation while UCD came in at No. 16.
2016 NCAA RECAP
UC Santa Barbara finished seventh in the NCAA Tournament at the program’s first-ever trip to the Big Dance. The Gauchos went 1-2 after falling to No. 2 Stanford 12-5 and No. 10 UC San Diego 10-5 before defeating No. 13 San Diego State 8-2.
MAKING HISTORY IN 2016
UC Santa Barbara made program history in the 2016 Big West Tournament, claiming its first-ever Big West Tournament crown at the eighth tournament since the league’s inaugural season in 2009. The Gauchos went 3-0, first taking down #6 CSUN 8-4 and #2 UC Irvine in a thrilling 7-6 sudden victory to clinch the semifinal win. UCSB then defeated defending tournament champion, #4 Hawai‘i, in a domineering 11-5 finish. With the win, the Gauchos earned their first trip to the NCAA Tournament. Long Beach State made history of its own after wrapping up the regular season with a 4-1 mark in league to earn its first-ever Big West women’s water polo regular season title.
Five if the six Big West squads were ranked for the entirety of last season with the exception of CSUN who fell out of the top 25 just once in 2016. The first Collegiate Water Polo Association Poll will be released on Jan. 18, 2017.
