AROUND THE BIG WEST
LBSU TAKES PART IN INAUGURAL PLAY4KAY SHOOTOUT
Long Beach State is taking part in a prestigious holiday tournament in Las Vegas, the inaugural Play4Kay Shootout. Benefiting the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, the eight-team tourney will take place December 19-21 at the new T-Mobile Arena. The Beach joins a stellar lineup of clubs as seven won 20+ games a year ago and four reached the NCAA Tournament including Pac-12 champion Oregon State, WAC champion New Mexico State and nationally-ranked South Florida, the 49er opponent in the tournament opener. LBSU will also play a non-bracketed game as part of the festivities at home against Biola on December 16.
NO FLUKE HERE
CSUN sophomore Channon Fluker had a huge double-double off the bench in a win over Weber State last week. Fluker scored 32 points and ripped down 19 rebounds in 30 minutes off the bench, the most points in a game in the conference this season and tying herself for the most rebounds in a game by a Big West player this season. This also marks the fourth time in Fluker’s young career that she has pulled down 19 rebounds in a game.
COCO DOES IT ALL
UC Santa Barbara guard Coco Miller has been a jack-of-all-trades for the Gauchos this season. The sophomore collected her first career double-double against San Diego State last week, scoring 12 points and pulling down 10 rebounds in 38 minutes. She also added three buckets from deep, two assists, a steal and didn’t commit a turnover. Miller has been a constant presence on the floor for UCSB, playing 289 of the team’s 320 minutes.
Cal Poly junior guard Lynn Leaupepe has stepped up into a key role this season, resulting in some impressive stat lines. Leaupepe has three double-doubles this season, two of which have come in her last two games. She put up 12 points and 13 rebounds against Pepperdine and 14 points and 13 rebounds against Grand Canyon. In nine games this season, Leaupepe has started each contest and is averaging 14.1 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists.
LATHAN’S SCORING SPREE
Cal State Fullerton junior Iman Lathan has been on a prolific scoring spree over her last five games, all of which have come as a reserve. Lathan has scored at least 20 points in all of those contests, averaging 22.4 points per game on 50.0% shooting (41-82) over that stretch. The guard’s scoring outburst has moved her to the top of the Big West scoring leaders, topping the chart at 18.3 points per game.
SNAPPING THE STREAK
Behind six players in double figures, Hawai’i snapped a four-game losing streak with a resounding win over Hawai’i Pacific. Sophomore forward Leah Salanoa led the way with a career-high 19 points, canning a personal best four shots from three-point land in only 19 minutes.
UC Riverside senior Simone DeCoud became the 130th member of the Big West 1,000-point club this season, reaching the milestone in a home win over Grand Canyon.
Three more players could join Decoud as Long Beach State senior Anna Kim (874) and Cal Poly senior Hannah Gilbert (874) should reach the list by season’s end. A player to keep an eye on is UC Riverside senior Réjane Verin (641) as she put up 544 points last year, her first with UCR after transferring from UNLV.
