Payne Ties School Record For Three-Pointers Made
Evan Payne (Akron, Ohio/Loyola Marymount) averaged 21.5 points over two games to help Long Beach State to a 1-1 split and earn Big West Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honors.
The 6-1 guard led all scorers with 17 points in a 75-66 home win over Pepperdine on Wednesday, hitting three three-pointers. He added two rebounds, an assist and a steal.
Payne also functioned as the primary defender on Lamond Murray, the leading scorer for the Waves at 22.8 points per game. Payne helped hold Murray to 16 points, nearly seven below his average.
On Saturday, Payne nearly spearheaded an upset on the road against Texas, scoring 26 points and tying a school record with eight three-pointers.
Payne’s scoring outburst helped the Beach lead for nearly 30 minutes of the contest, but they fell just short by a 71-65 margin.
Payne added five rebounds and finished 8-of-14 from distance.
For the week, he shot 52.4 percent (11-of-21) from three-point range. He ranks No. 4 in the Big West in three-pointers made per game (2.2).
