Finals Week Offers Light Women's Hoops Slate
Big West Women's Basketball Weekly Release No. 5
Finals week around the Big West has a light slate in store for women's hoops as 13 games dot the landscape. Highlighting the schedue is CSUN making a trip to the Northwest to battle #11 Washington and Weber State, while league-leading UC Davis returns home to take on regional rival Saint Mary's.
AROUND THE BIG WEST
TITANS TOP MONTANA
Cal State Fullerton claimed its first win against Montana in six tries last week. The Titans historic win was bouyed by a season-high field goal percentage (48.3) and led by junior Iman Lathan’s fourth 20-point game (22) of the season. Sophomore Lauren Nubla also recorded a career-high eight assists, while classmate Daeja Smith put up her second double-double of the year with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
TALL FERN STANDS OUT
CSUN’s Tessa Boagni had a big day leading the team to a big road win over Northern Arizona last week. The junior had a season-high 20 points, a team-best seven rebounds and nailed a career-high three buckets from beyond the arc in 32 minutes. Coming into the game, Boagni had hit four threes in her previous six contests.
CASHING IN FROM THE LINE
Cal Poly has made a living at the foul line this season, leading the Big West in free throws made (109), free throw percentage (78.4) and ranking third in attempts (139). The Mustangs’ free throw percentage is nearly six points higher than the second-best team in the league and also ranks 14th in the NCAA.
Long Beach State has been a distruptive force on the defensive end this season. The Beach leads the Big West in steals per game (11.9), turnovers forced per game (22.9), total steals (95) and turnover margin (+6.75). Those numbers are also high on the NCAA scoreboard as the 49ers rank 18th in total steals, 26th in steals per game, 15th in turnovers forced and 23rd in turnover margin.
UC Irvine sophomore Andee Ritter led the way offensively and defensively in the ‘Eaters win over Nevada last week. Ritter nailed six threes on her way to a career-high 23 points and anchored a stout defensive effort with a career-high eight steals. The eight steals is the most in a game in the league this season and is also tied for fifth-most in a game in the NCAA this season.
AUTOMATIC FROM DEEP
UC Davis junior Dani Nafekh has assumed the mantle of the top three-point shooter for the Aggies. Nafekh leads the Big West and ranks fourth in the NCAA in three-point percentage at 59.4%. Nafekh is tied for first in the league in three-pointers made (19) and made a Big West season-high eight last last week against San Diego State.
UC Riverside senior Simone DeCoud became the 130th member of the Big West 1,000-point club last week, reaching the milestone in a home win over Grand Canyon.
Three more players could join Decoud as Long Beach State senior Anna Kim (847) and Cal Poly senior Hannah Gilbert (848) should reach the list by season’s end. A player to keep an eye on is UC Riverside senior Réjane Verin (606) as she put up 544 points last year, her first with UCR after transferring from UNLV.
