A career high in points and a game-winning buzzer beater lifted CSUN junior Tavrion Dawson (Long Beach, Calif./Gardena Serra HS) to Big West Men’s Basketball Player of the Week accolades.
The 6-8 forward helped the Matadors shed a three-game losing streak with a dominant performance in Saturday’s 79-76 victory against Idaho State.
Dawson scored 28 points on a sizzling 10-of-14 shooting effort. In a back-and-forth affair, he hit a game-winning three-point bucket at the buzzer. He also notched a driving lay-up with a minute to play to give CSUN a one-point lead.
He made 7-of-8 shots from the foul line to help the Matadors erase a 13-point second half deficit. He keyed a 20-3 run with 10 of his career-best 28 points taking place during that juncture.
Dawson ranks No. 4 in the Big West in free throw percentage (.868), making 33 of his 38 attempts this season.
He added six rebounds and three assists in 33 minutes as he made his first start of the 2016-17 campaign.
