Big West With 13 Players Named to NSCAA Women's All-West Region



2016 NSCAA All-West Region

A total of 13 Big West players were honored on the 2016 NSCAA Women’s Division I All-West Region Team as presented b the National Soccer Association of America/Continental Tire for their standout performances this season as announced, Tuesday.

Five Big West programs appeared on the list including representatives from regular season champion CSUN and Big West Tournament champion Long Beach State in addition to UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara and Hawai‘i.

The West Region is comprised of schools from the Big West, West Coast and Western Athletic conferences.

Regular season defending champion CSUN led the way and placed three on the first team.

Representing the Matadors was Big West Goalkeeper of the Year, Jovani McCaskill, Big West Defensive Player of the Year, Nicole Thompson and senior Taylor Hobson.

McCaskill led the Big West in a multitude of categories including: shutouts (14), goals against (9), goals-against average (.40), and save percentage (.910). The junior also helped the Matadors set a new team mark with 15 clean sheets in a single season, which tied the league record. Her 14 individual shutouts are also a Big West all-time best.  Thompson and Hobson also helped CSUN string together six-consecutive conference shutouts to set a new program mark.

Midfielder of the Year, Mimi Rangel, Freshman of the Year Ashley Gonzales, represented Long Beach State and received first-team accolades.

Rangel received Big West Tournament Most Valuable Player honors while Gonzales paced the conference with 11 scores and 25 points. The duo helped their team to its second-consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament and sixth all-time in LBSU history.

Hawai‘I placed Addison Steiner on the first team after a year that saw the best start in program history.  The senior netted eight goals and recorded an assist for 17 points, the sixth-most in league. Her four game-winners were the most in the Big West.

All-West second team honorees included LBSU’s Chloe Froment, UC Irvine’s Kelsey Texeira and Kiana Palacios and UC Santa Barbara’s Amanda Ball.

UC Santa Barbara’s Sydney Fuertes, Hawaii’s Raisa Strom-Okimoto and UC Irvine’s Noel Baham received third-team honors.
