Light Week Ahead For Men's Basketball
Men's Basketball Release No. 4
Eleven games are on the men's basketball docket this week, including Long Beach State's jaunt to No. 4 Kansas and UC Riverside taking on No. 9 UCLA.
Only 11 games are on this week’s schedule due to the approach of fall exams. Long Beach State travels to No. 4 Kansas and UC Riverside visits No. 9 UCLA in the two ranked matchups on the docket. The Beach seeks to end a seven-game losing skid this week. All seven losses have taken place on the road. In addition to facing Kansas, LBSU finishes off its road trip against New Mexico State on Saturday. UC Santa Barbara, off to an 0-5 start, seeks its first win at home against Sonoma State.
Martin With Strong Start
Freshman Dikymbe Martin is off to a solid start in his UC Riverside career. The Inland Empire native made his first career start in Friday’s game at Utah, and responded with 15 points, four rebounds, five assists and three steals. He shot 6-of-11 from the field and 3-of-4 from three-point range. Martin erupted for 26 points in the previous game against Fresno Pacific. The point guard is tied for No. 4 in the Big West with a .571 field goal percentage, having made 20 of his 35 shots.
Keep It Coming, Moneke
UC Davis junior forward Chima Moneke continues to excel in his first season at the Division I level. He made the GCI Great Alaska Shootout All-Tournament Team last week, averaging 13.7 points and 9.3 rebounds over the three games. He concluded the tournament with his second double-double of the season, 21 points and 12 rebounds versus Oakland.
Gabe Levin registered his conference-leading third double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds against Binghamton last week. The Long Beach State junior also had double-doubles against North Carolina and Louisville. Despite a tough start for the Beach, Levin has been a bright spot with his 7.6 rebounds per game average ranking third in the Big West.
Through the first seven games, UC Irvine’s defense is limiting opponents to 35.8% shooting from the field. That mark is tops in the Big West and No. 9 in the nation. The Anteaters have won 59 of their last 64 games when holding the opposition to under 40 percent from the field. In addition, UCI is 60-3 over the last several seasons when keeping the opposition to 60 points or less.
