UC Davis Sits In Pole Position As December Begins
Big West Women's Basketball Weekly Release No. 4
As the calendar flips to the second month of the season, UC Davis finds itself atop the standings with a 4-1 record. The Aggies have a pair of challenges to its stellar record this week as they host San Diego State and travel to #11 Stanford.
AROUND THE BIG WEST
TOEAINA’S BIG NIGHT
Hawai’i junior guard Sarah Toeaina had a career night against San Jose State last week, putting up a personal-best 24 points in 36 minutes. Toeaina, who is averaging a career-high 11.1 points, topped her previous scoring effort by 10 points.
BEACH RAINS 3s
The Long Beach State offense includes a healthy dose of three pointers as the club leads the Big West in threes made (52), made per game (8.7) and attempts (185). Those figures also rank 21st, 23rd and eighth in the NCAA. LBSU has made 13 more, attempted 60 more and makes 1.3 more three-pointers than the next best team in each category in the conference.
UC Davis sophomore Morgan Bertsch has scored in double figures in each of her five games this season, averaging 16.2 points per contest. Bertsch has scored in double figures in 13 straight games dating back to last season, the longest current streak in the Big West.
NO SOPHOMORE SLUMP
CSUN sophomore center Channon Fluker has shown no signs of regression in her second season. Fluker is averaging 15.8 points, 10.8 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game. She leads the league in rebounding, blocks and double-doubles (4), while ranking third in scoring. Fluker’s stats also place on the national leaderboard as she ranks 14th in total rebounds (65), 19th in total blocks (15), 23rd in rebounds per game and 30th in blocks per game.
GETTING TO KNOW HANNAH
Cal Poly forward Hannah Gilbert has been one of the league’s best kept secrets but her play so far this season has put the spotlight on the senior. Gilbert leads the league in scoring (18.0), ranks fifth in rebounds per game (8.2), fifth in free throw percentage (80.0) and third in field goal shooting (57.8). The free throw shooting is especially impressive since Gilbert has never shot better than 62.9% from the charity stripe in a season.
TITAN OFFENSE EXPLODES AGAIN
After putting up 86 points in a narrow loss earlier this month, Cal State Fullerton crossed the 90-point barrier with 97 points in a win over Whittier. The Titans’ point total was the most for the club since a 100-point outing against Sacramento State on December 9, 2010. The 48-point margin of victory over the Poets was also the largest since a 49-point win over San Jose State on January 7, 1990.
NEARING GRAND STATUS
Barring unforeseen circumstances, four players are leading the charge into the 1,000-point club this season.
UC Riverside senior Simone DeCoud is tops on the list with 995 points, while Long Beach State senior Anna Kim (847) and Gilbert (848) should join the list by season’s end. Another player to keep an eye on is Verin (606) as she put up 544 points last year, her first with UCR after transferring from UNLV.
