11/21/2016

Two representatives from Hawai‘i and one from Long Beach State comprised the list of women’s volleyball weekly honorees.

Taylor Notches 10th Career Player of the Week Honor

For the second straight week, Hawai‘i senior Nikki Taylor (Honolulu, Hawai‘i/Kaiser HS) captured Big West Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week accolades as her performances helped her team clinch its second straight conference title.

The 6-4 opposite earned her fourth weekly honor this season, and 10th of her career, placing her second all-time in Big West history.  She only trails Cal Poly’s Kylie Atherstone (11) on the career POW list.

Taylor’s all-around contributions lifted UH to victories over Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara as she averaged 5.29 kills, 2.57 digs, 1.14 service aces and 0.57 blocks per set.  She also hit .333 with a team-leading 37 kills and just 12 errors in 75 swings.  Taylor’s eight service aces and 47.5 points also topped the squad.

In the sweep of the Mustangs, Taylor collected a match-high 15 kills, seven digs, five aces and four blocks as head coach Dave Shoji compiled career win 1,200.  Three of her five aces were registered during a seven-point serving run that propelled the Rainbow Wahine to a 25-15 win in set 3.

On Senior Night against the Gauchos, Taylor pounded a match-high 22 kills to go along with 11 digs, securing her sixth double-double this season.  Nine of her kills came in set three when she hit .571 with just one error in the frame.  Her 22-kill effort marked the seventh time this season she has exceeded the 20-kill plateau.  She swung at a .405 clip (22-5-42) for the match and her three aces gave her a Big West-leading 51 for the season.

Others nominated: Nele Barber (Long Beach State); Chelsea Doyle (UC Riverside)

Harward Averages Over Six Digs Per Set In Two Wins

Long Beach State freshman Hailey Harward (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS) earned her second Big West Women’s Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week award selection after averaging 6.17 digs in two conference victories.

The 5-9 libero tallied 18 digs against Cal State Fullerton and followed with 19 scoops versus UC Riverside in a pair of 3-0 sweeps for The Beach.

Harward posted double-digit digs for the 18th and 19th times this year.

Others nominated: Maddie Hubbell (UC Riverside); Emilia Petrachi (UC Santa Barbara); Savanah Kahakai (Hawai‘i)

Iosia Directs Hawai‘i To Big West Championship

Setter Norene Iosia (Torrance, Calif./Redondo Union HS) helped Hawai‘i capture its second straight conference championship and earned her third Big West Women’s Volleyball Freshman Player of the Week award.

Averaging 10.57 assists and 3.57 digs per set, Iosia continued her outstanding play as UH upended Cal Poly in three sets and UC Santa Barbara in four sets.

She recorded her 11th and 12th double-doubles of the season, and totaled 74 assists in the two wins.  She is now just two assists shy of reaching 900 for the season.

Iosia had 34 assists and 10 digs against the Mustangs.  She contributed three blocks, including two of the solo variety.  Against the Gauchos, Iosia dished out 40 assists with a team-high 15 digs.  She directed the UH offense to .315 hitting – the 11th time this season that the team hit over .300.
