Mitchem, Brouker, Ruddins Help Squads Sweep

The three Players of the Week in women’s volleyball were instrumental in helping their teams to 2-0 sweeps in conference play.

Mitchem Leads Charge In Dominant Sweeps

Senior Annie Mitchem (Friendswood, Texas/Irvine Valley College) hit .489 and averaged 4.17 kills per set as Hawai‘i rolled to wins over Long Beach State and CSUN, taking over sole possession of first place in the conference and earning her Big West Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week honors.

The 6-3 middle hitter recorded 25 kills with seven digs, four blocks and three service aces as the Rainbow Wahine improved to 18-5 overall and 11-1 in the Big West.

Avenging an earlier five-set loss to LBSU, the Rainbow Wahine utilized Mitchem’s 13 kills on .619 hitting to take the 25-13, 25-15, 25-16 triumph.  She committed no errors in 21 swings.  Mitchem played solidly on the left side against the 49ers with a match-high in kills and season-high in hitting percentage.  She also contributed four digs, two blocks and a service ace.

Mitchem faced no letdown in the 25-9, 25-14, 25-16 victory over the Matadors.  Her match-high 12 kills paced UH, and she hit .385 with just two errors in 26 attempts.  Mitchem also tied a career high with two service aces, adding three digs and two blocks.

She had 15 points in both matches.
