Busy Month Ahead For Golf

Big West At A Glance

Cal Poly Opens 2016-17 With A Bang:
The Cal Poly women’s golf team captured a share of first place with Sam Houston State at the Hobble Creek Fall Classic.  The season-opening triumph is the first for Cal Poly since Oct. 28-29, 2013, when the Mustangs claimed their own Firestone Grill Invitational at Cypress Ridge. It’s the 18th tournament victory since the program was inaugurated in the fall of 2000.  The Mustangs look to continue the success in October as they compete in three events, including their own event, Lady Mustang Invitational, Oct. 22-23 at the Cypress Ridge Golf Club in Arroyo Grande, Calif.

The men’s team, which fired four rounds under par on the final day, found its own success as the Mustangs captured their 17th team title at the Hartford Hawk Invitational.  Justin De Los Santos, the 2015 Big West Conference individual champion, led the Mustangs in the final round with a three-under-par 69, finishing with a five-under-par 139 total and a tie for fifth place.

CSUN, UH Prepare For Home Events:
The CSUN men’s team is gearing up for its annual event - Bill Cullum Invitational - Oct. 17-18 at the Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley, Calif.  The Matadors will be joined by conference foes Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, UC Irvine, UC Riverside and UC Santa Barbara.

Both the men’s and women’s Hawai’i teams are hosting events in October.  The Princeville Makai Invitational, scheduled for Oct. 30-November 1 features three men’s teams from the Big West - host Hawai’i, Cal Poly and UC Irvine.  The women are slated to host the Naea Pac 12 Preview October 23-25.

UC Davis’ Whirlwind September:
The Aggies men’s golf team crammed three events into the month of September, which included a Saturday-Sunday tournament in North Carolina, followed by a two-day event which began the following day in San Francisco.  Despite the crazy travel schedule, the Aggies found success.  After their late flight back home from North Carolina, UCD finished fifth at the Olympic Club Intercollegiate in San Francisco, which included three top 20 finishers.  They wrapped up the month of September with their second-consecutive fifth place finish at the Windon Memorial in Glenview, Ill.

‘Eaters Off To A Strong Start:
Last season the highest finish the UC Irvine women’s golf team posted was eighth place, but this year the Anteaters are on a much different path.  So far this year the Anteaters have clinched a second and fifth place team finish and have two more tournament this fall to build on their achievements with the NMSU Aggie Invitational (Oct. 3-5) and Las Vegas Collegiate (Oct. 23-25).

Nygren, Edberg Earn September Golfer of the Month Awards:
A team title and two individual medalist performances led to the recognition of Cole Nygren and Martina Edberg as the Big West Golfers of the Month for September.
Nygren helped Cal Poly capture the Hartford Hawk Invitational with a seventh-place finish.  In a tournament that was shortened to 36 holes due to rain, Nygren recorded two rounds at under par to finish at 4-under 140.  He had a 69 in the opening round, his eighth career round in the 60s, and followed that with a 71.  Earlier at the Olympic Intercollegiate in San Francisco, he tied for 19th place with an aggregate score of 7-over 220.
The first CSF golfer to win consecutive tournaments in school history, Edberg tallied her fifth and sixth career victories and set a new 54-hole school and course record with a 10-under 206 at the 6,200-yard Washington State Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman, Wash.  Her seven stroke WSU Cougar Cup victory was facilitated by a 6-under 66 in round three.  Her first two rounds featured a 72 and 68.  At The Rose City Collegiate in Aurora, Ore., she won by one stroke.  Her three rounds of par or better extended her own school record to 37 rounds of par or better for her career.
