Stanford Invitational, West Regional Preview Attract Big West Clubs

Big West Weekly Release No. 6

With just four weeks to go before the Big West Championships, the first phase of the stretch run will feature two major meets on the docket that feature some of the best clubs in the region and nation.

One of those two meets will be the 43rd annual Stanford Invitational, an event that will include Cal Poly, UC Davis and UC Santa Barbara. The race, which is held at the Stanford Golf Course, will feature a women’s 6K and a men’s 8K. Both races will have nearly 25 competitors, headlined by the host Cardinal which are ranked in the top 11 in both of the USTFCCCA national polls.

The Sacramento Capital Cross Challenge will feature Cal State Fullerton, CSUN, UC Davis, UC Riverside and Hawai’i alongside some of the finest squads in the country. The meet also doubles as the West Region Preview as Haggin Oaks Golf Complex will be the site of the 2016 NCAA West Regional Championships on November 11. The packed schedule will include collegiate races that will consist of a women’s 6K and men’s 8K.

• Cal Poly has established itself as one of the top squads in the region as the Mustang men and women have appeared in all three USTFCCCA West Region polls. This week the men are at the #10 slot, while the women are coming in at #9. The women’s West Region poll has two more Big West clubs listed as UC Davis comes in at #13 and UC Santa Barbara owns the #15 position.

• The season will end in the islands as Hawai’i hosts the 2016 Big West Cross Country Championships at Kahuku Golf Course on the North Shore of O’ahu. The league championship will be return to the Aloha State for the first time since 1992, while UH hosts its first conference meet since the WAC Championship of 2011.

The UC Santa Barbara men and Cal Poly women will be looking to defend their titles. The Gauchos are seeking their third consecutive crown, while the Mustangs are in search of a second straight title and fourth in the past five seasons. The men will have the first run through the Kahuku course as they run the 8K at 7:00 local time, while the women’s 6K championship race will be run 45 minutes later.
