First-Time Winners Decorate Awards List

A trio of players from Cal State Fullerton, CSUN and Hawai‘i collected this week’s women’s volleyball awards for the first time in their careers.

Fayad Helps Titans Snap Winless Streak

Career highs in kills and digs from Cal State Fullerton sophomore Shimen Fayad (Victoria, B.C./Wichita State) helped the Titans win their first conference opener in five years and earned her Big West Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week honor.

A 6-0 outside hitter tallied 27 kills and 22 digs to spearhead Fullerton to a four-set victory over UC Riverside on Saturday.  It was Fayad’s team-leading ninth double-double of the year.

The win over the Highlanders snapped a 19-match Big West Conference losing streak that dated back to Nov. 15, 2014.

Fayad, who hit a torrid .390 for the match with just four errors in 59 attempts, became even more productive as the match wore on.

She was responsible for 10 of Fullerton’s 13 kills, including match point, in the fourth and final set.  She hit .769 in that set.

Others nominated: Raeann Greisen (Cal Poly); Aeryn Owens (CSUN); Nele Barber (Long Beach State); McKenna Granato (Hawai‘i)

Sato Helps Matadors Dig Out Pair of Five-Set Victories

Junior Katie Sato (Calabasas, Calif./Agoura HS) captured her first career Big West Women’s Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week honor after averaging 5.00 digs per set in two straight five-set road victories to open up conference play.

Sato had 50 scoops over the two matches at UC Irvine and UC Davis.  She registered 29 digs, five off her career-best, against the Anteaters.  She added six assists and two service aces in the match.

Against the Aggies, she then had 21 digs along with another ace.

The Matadors have won a season-high three straight matches.

Others nominated: Katie Roux (Cal State Fullerton); Heather Reed (UC Davis); Ali Koumelis (UC Irvine); Savanah Kahakai (Hawai‘i)

Iosia Directs Hawai‘i Offense To 2-0 Conference Start

Hawai‘i setter Norene Iosia (Torrance, Calif./Redondo Union) led her team to a 2-0 start in conference play to claim Big West Women’s Volleyball Freshman Player of the Week accolades.

She averaged 13.29 assists, 2.86 digs and 0.43 service aces per set as the Rainbow Wahine swept UC Santa Barbara and toppled Cal Poly in four in a conference-opening road trip.

Iosia guided an efficient UH attack in the win over the Gauchos as the Rainbow Wahine outhit their opponent .382-to-.112.  She dished out 35 assists to go along with eight digs, two aces and a block.

Against the Mustangs, she handed out a career-high 58 assists (14.50 aps) while posting her team-high sixth double-double with 12 digs.  She completed the all-around effort with two block assists and an ace.

Iosia directed a balanced attack as four different Rainbow Wahine hitters amassed double-digits in kills for the second time this season.
