AROUND THE BIG WEST
HAWAI‘I MOUNTS BEST START IN HISTORY
After a 2-1 win at Air Force Tuesday, Hawai‘i moved to 7-1-1 on the year, the best-ever start in program history through nine games. UH is in the midst of a historic campaign and looks to start conference play the same way it opened its non-conference action. The Rainbow Wahine will return to the pitch when they meet the Mustangs in San Luis Obispo. UH is 2-1 on the road in 2016.
CSUN SETS NEW PROGRAM MARK
After shutting out its sixth opponent of the season last weekend, CSUN earned its sixth-straight clean sheet to set a new program record. Junior goalkeeper Jovani McCaskill recorded her 13th career shutout in the process (her sixth on the year). The six shutouts are the most in the Big West and rank fourth-best in the NCAA.
UC SANTA BARBARA DROPS FIRST CONTEST
UC Santa Barbara’s perfect record came to an end last weekend after going 1-1 on the road in Texas. However, before dropping the match to Texas 2-1, the Gauchos moved to 8-0 on the year after downing Texas-San Antonio in a dominating 4-1 fashion. The 8-0 start was the best since 1989 when the Gauchos went 12-0 before dropping its first match. The 8-1-0 mark is the best since that year when UCSB went on to play in the NCAA Tournament.
PALACIOS ATOP THE NATION
UC Irvine junior Kiana Palacios is tied for the second-best goal total in the NCAA with nine scores on the year. The nine goals are the best in the Big West. Palacios also ranks nationally in the top 10 in the following categories: game winning goals (4-T4th), points per game (2.30, 8th), and toal points (23, 2nd).
UC IRVINE ASSISTS ALL
UC Irvine is seventh in the NCAA with a 2.80 assist per game average. The Anteaters are also the only program in the Big West to have three student-athletes tally five or more assists in Noel Baham (6), Grayson Galbraith (5) and Kiana Palacios (5). Baham’s six assists are tied for sixth-most in the nation.
LONG BEACH HOSTS RANKED OPPONENT
For the second week in a row, Long Beach State will square off against a top-10 team in Brigham Young. The 49ers will travel to face the Cougars, Saturday. This will mark just the second road test for the 49ers this season after playing UCLA on the road last weekend.
