Baham, McCaskill Help Teams Continue Solid Starts

9/12/2016

Favorable results against a pair of Pac-12 foes catapulted juniors Noel Baham and Jovani McCaskill into their selections as women’s soccer players of the week.

Baham Fuels Wins at Fullerton Tournament

UC Irvine junior Noel Baham’s (Redlands, Calif./Santa Clara) two goals and three assists in two victories earned her Big West Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Baham’s seven points give her 11 total, third-most in the Big West.  She was instrumental in helping the Anteaters erase two deficits to knock off Pac-12 foe Oregon at the Fullerton Tournament.  Baham equalized the scoreline at 1-1 with a 40th minute goal.  With the score deadlocked at 2-2, Baham picked up the game-winning assist as her initial header went off the crossbar and rebounded to teammate Sammie James, who booted the ball in for the 3-2 triumph.

UCI’s three goals against Oregon equaled the amount that Oregon had allowed all season entering the match.

Involved in three scores during Sunday’s 4-0 whitewash of UAB, Baham scored a goal to go along with two assists.  Her second goal of the weekend came at the 30:54 mark as she knocked in a rebounded shot off the roof of the goal.  UCI’s margin of victory was its largest since 2011 in a game where the Anteaters outshot UAB, 28-2.

Others nominated: Stephanie Magellan (Cal Poly); Tala Haddad (Cal State Fullerton); Mimi Rangel (Long Beach State); Blanca Barrio (UC Riverside); Shaelan Murison (UC Santa Barbara); Addie Steiner (Hawai‘i)

McCaskill Extends Shutout Streak

Having not allowed a goal for 538 consecutive minutes, CSUN junior Jovani McCaskill (San Diego, Calif./Eastlake HS) notched shutouts against San Jose State and Pepperdine to capture Big West Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week acclaim.

The back-to-back 0-0 draws represented the third and fourth consecutive complete game shutouts for McCaskill, who also was involved in a shared shutout against South Dakota on Aug. 28.  McCaskill has not yielded a goal since the second half of a 1-0 loss to North Dakota State on Aug. 26.

McCaskill has allowed just two goals for a 0.23 goals against average on the season.  CSUN has tied a program record with five consecutive shutouts.

The netminder made six saves in both games, including against No. 21 Pepperdine.

Others nominated: Chelsea Barry (Cal Poly); Jennifer Stuart (Cal State Fullerton); Mimi Akaogi (Long Beach State); Alexis Smith (UC Davis); Grayson Galbraith (UC Irvine); Annie Bailey (UC Riverside); Sydney Fuertes (UC Santa Barbara)
