Cal Poly Duo Wins Lagoon Open
Top Cal Poly runners Clayton Hutchins and Peyton Bilo won their respective races at the season-opening UCSB Lagoon Open to capture the initial 2016 Big West Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week awards.
Hutchins, a junior from San Anselmo, Calif., was the individual medalist in the 8K race in the Blue-Green rivalry matchup with a time of 24:30.74. His performance helped the Mustangs to a 19-40 team win against the Gauchos. Hutchins outdueled back-to-back conference medalist Bryan Guijarro by six seconds down the stretch, and improved his previous time at the meet (2014) by nearly 46 seconds.
Bilo, the 2015 Big West Women’s Freshman of the Year, began her sophomore campaign on an auspicious note with a dominant performance in the 5K race. The El Dorado Hills, Calif. native paced the Mustangs to a 19-44 team win against their chief rivals thanks to a blistering winning time of 17:17.84. The winning time bested her nearest competitor by a half-minute. In addition, Bilo knocked off more than 38 seconds from her time at the meet last year.
