UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara Honored In Women's Volleyball Awards


A pair of UC Riverside performers and a UC Santa Barbara redshirt freshman secured the initial women’s volleyball weekly honors for the 2016 season.

Rosas Paces Highlander Offense at Molten Classic

UC Riverside senior Fabiana Rosas (Hacienda Heights, Calif./Los Altos HS), who landed a spot on the Molten Classic All-Tournament Team, also earned Big West Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week honors.

Rosas helped the Highlanders to a 2-1 tournament record, including a near upset of host California.  She averaged 5.70 kills and 3.50 digs per set while hitting .277 for the week.

She slammed a match-high 26 kills to go along with 18 digs in UCR’s 3-1 victory over Southern Utah.  In the opening match of the tournament against the Thunderbirds, Rosas keyed the three-set sweep with 16 kills on .467 hitting.

Rosas notched 15 kills through two sets against Cal as the Highlanders stormed to a 2-0 lead in the match.  With the score knotted at 10 apiece in the third set, Rosas exited the match with an injury.  The Golden Bears went on to come back and win the match in five sets.  Rosas hit .323 (15-5-31) with nine digs upon her departure.

Hubbell Named All-Tournament at Molten Classic

UC Riverside senior Maddie Hubbell (Bakersfield, Calif./Liberty HS) averaged 5.75 digs per set over three matches at the Cal Molten Classic, securing Big West Women’s Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week honors.

The Highlander libero had double-digit digs to help her team finish 2-1 in the tournament.  She had 17 digs in a sweep of Southern Utah, and came back with 30 scoops in a four-set rematch triumph against the Thunderbirds.

Hubbell dug up 22 balls in a five-set loss against the host Golden Bears in the tourney finale.  For her efforts, she was selected to the Molten Classic All-Tournament Team.

Hubbell also tallied 13 assists and three service aces over the three contests.

Ruddins Emerges As Top Gaucho Hitter

UC Santa Barbara outside hitter Lindsey Ruddins (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Aliso Niguel HS) debuted in spectacular fashion as the Big West Women’s Volleyball Freshman of the Week and UNLV Invitational All-Tournament Team recipient.

The awards resulted from a solid three-match stretch in which she averaged 4.92 kills and 2.92 digs per set.  The Gauchos posted a 2-1 record as Ruddins notched a team-high 59 kills and accounted for 34.5 percent of UCSB’s kills.

Ruddins opened the tournament with 16 kills and nine digs in a 3-0 loss to host UNLV.  She upped her total to 24 kills and added 14 digs in a five-set comeback win over New Mexico State.  She also hit .281 with 19 kills and only three attack errors in a 3-1 triumph over Albany.

An all-around contributor, Ruddins totaled seven blocks and averaged 5.3 points per set for the tournament.
