AROUND THE BIG WEST

BALL HAMMERS HOME HAT TRICK
UC Santa Barbara junior Amanda Ball netted a hat trick to clinch a 3-2 double OT win at Fresno State in the season opener. Ball is the first to record a hat trick this season and her three goals of 2016 tie for the most on the year (UC Irvine’s Kiana Palacios also netted three scores last weekend).

Only three student-athletes netted a hat trick in 2015, the most recent coming from former Titan and reigning Big West Tournament MVP, Christina Burkenroad, on November 5, 2015 in the conference tournament semifinals.

ONE HUNDRED IS GRAND
UC Irvine coach Scott Juniper celebrated 100 wins last weekend when the Anteaters recorded a 2-0 shutout victory over Saint Mary’s. In his 10th year at the helm, Juniper led UCI to a 2-0 sweep through opening weekend to kick off the 2016 campaign. Juniper becomes the fifth coach in Big West women’s soccer history to accomplish the feat since the addition of the sport in 1996.  Juniper joins the company of active coaches in Alex Crozier (217), Paul Stumpf (159) and Mauricio Ingrassia (137) in the 100-plus-wins club.

UNDEFEATEDalt
After the first week of play, six Big West programs are undefeated. UC Irvine leads the pack with the most wins after a pair of Ws in week one while UC Santa Barbara and Cal State Fullerton went 1-0.  Additionally, Long Beach State, Hawai‘i and CSUN all recorded a victory and a stalemate for 1-0-1 overall marks.

ANTEATERS ON A TEAR

This season marks the first time UC Irvine opened its campaign with a 2-0 mark since 2011.  The ’11 Anteaters would go on to record a 14-1-3 overall mark and would play in the NCAA Tournament. UCI looks to make it back to the Tourney for the first time in five years.

With a six goal effort last weekend in two matches, UCI leads the league in goals (6), points (19) shots per game (14.0), assists (7) and shots on goal (19).

PALACIOS PULLS AWAY
UC Irvine junior Kiana Palacios had a standout first weekend tallying three goals and an assist for seven points. Palacios leads the league in points and is tied for the most goals (3) and shots taken (8).  The junior is more than halfway to her point total from a year ago (5g, 3a, 13pts) after just two contests.

STARTING OFF ON THE RIGHT  FOOT
Cal State Fullerton opened its campaign perfect with a 2-1 win over Saint Mary’s, making it the second year in a row that the Titans have clinched its season opener after going winless in its previous six. Overall, Fullerton is now 8-14-2 in season openers.
