AVCA Preseason Poll
Defending Big West women's volleyball champions Hawai'i will open the season as the sixth-ranked team in the nation, according to Wednesday's American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Preseason Poll. Long Beach State, who finished second in the conference in 2015, are receiving votes.
Ranked No. 7 in the final AVCA Poll of 2015, the Rainbow Wahine are coming off an exceptional season which saw them amass a 29-2 record overall, a 16-0 conference record, and their 34th NCAA Tournament appearance, which ended in the Elite Eight.
The Wahine are scheduled to host three other teams in the Top 25: they will open the season with No. 4 Wisconsin (Aug. 26), before meeting No. 12 UCLA (Sept. 3) and No. 7 Washington (Sept. 11). They will also host Arizona (Aug. 28), who are receiving votes.
Long Beach State finished 25-6 overall and 13-3 in conference play. The Beach face a pair of ranked opponents in the non-conference season, No. 21 Loyola Marymount (Sept. 8) and No. 12 UCLA (Sept. 14), as well as a team receiving votes, Arizona State (Sept. 10).
The two teams will meet on Oct. 8 in Long Beach with a rematch in Honolulu Nov. 4.
Hawai'i are the favorites to win the 2016 Big West title, while Long Beach State finished second in the coaches preseason poll.
