Barr Advances To NCAA Final

UC Davis senior Erika Barr, the two-time Big West champion in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, qualified for the finals of that event in the NCAA Track and Field Championship at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field.
Competing in Flight 2 with 11 other runners, Barr finished sixth with a personal best time of 10 minutes, 1.60 seconds in Thursday's race. She handily broke her prior personal record of 10:08.63 set at the Stanford Invitational this year. The top five runners in each of the two heats, plus the next two fastest times advanced to Saturday's final, which will be televised on ESPN at 3:54 p.m.
Barr slid into the 12th spot overall, nearly six seconds ahead of the cutoff. She sped up on the final three laps to move up from the back of the pack into the top seven, and inched into sixth on the bell lap.
Long Beach State senior Fatima Vergara concluded a successful career on Thursday with a 23rd place showing in the hammer. Vergara, who reached the NCAA meet with a personal best throw of 199-08 at the West Preliminary, opened the competition with a toss of 183-11. She finished her career as a two-time Big West champion in the hammer.
LBSU junior Riley Cooks begins her quest for heptathlon glory with competition in four events Friday, beginning with the 100-meter hurdles at 12:30 p.m. UC Santa Barbara senior Jessica Emde also takes part in the women's high jump at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.
