Alcantara, Eastman Capture Baseball Weekly Awards

5/30/2016

Adam Alcantara lifted UC Irvine to a season-ending series victory, and Colton Eastman guided Cal State Fullerton to the outright conference title as the duo earned Big West Baseball Field Player and Pitcher of the Week accolades.

Alcantara Ends Season On Red Hot Streak

Extending his hitting streak to 16 games, including an inside-the-park-home run, UC Irvine junior Adam Alcantara (Alta Loma, Calif./Bishop Amat HS) collected Big West Baseball Field Player of the Week honors.

The outfielder hit .583 (7-for-12) with a 1.000 slugging percentage to help the Anteaters take a 2-1 series victory over visiting CSUN.  He doubled twice, and recorded just the program’s second inside-the-park homer in 15 years.  The 16-game hit streak represents the 11th in UCI history.

Alcantara, who recorded at least one RBI in all three games, opened the series going 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI in Thursday’s 4-1 victory.

In Friday’s 8-2 setback, Alcantara contributed a pair of hits and drove in one of the two Anteater runs.

He saved his best for the season finale.  Alcantara reached base in all five plate appearances, going 4-for-4 with a walk.  He scored twice and drove in four of the team’s seven runs in a 7-6 victory.  He blasted a pitch off the left-center field wall in the third, scoring John Brontsema and hustling around to score under the tag as UCI took a 3-1 lead.

Alcantara also stole his fifth base of the season in Saturday’s win.

Others nominated: Nick Meyer (Cal Poly); Josh Vargas (Cal State Fullerton); Mark Contreras (UC Riverside); Josh Rojas (Hawai‘i)

Eastman Pitches Titans To Big West Title

Freshman Colton Eastman (Fresno, Calif./Central HS) allowed one run in 8.1 innings of work to defeat rival Long Beach State and help Cal State Fullerton to the outright conference title, spurring him to Big West Baseball Pitcher of the Week honors.

The 8.1 innings was a career-long outing for the right-handed hurler, who did not walk a batter and struck out nine Dirtbags in a pressure-packed 2-1 victory.  The Titans owned a one-game lead on the Dirtbags coming into the contest, and the win not only wrapped up the program’s second straight championship, but clinched the Big West automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.

Eastman kept LBSU off balance throughout, as he allowed just one base runner through the first six innings and faced just one over the minimum during that stretch.  He retired nine straight batters at one point.

Others nominated: Justin Calomeni (Cal Poly); Angel Rodriguez (CSUN); Darren McCaughan (Long Beach State); Elliot Surrey (UC Irvine); Angel Landazuri (UC Riverside); Shane Bieber (UC Santa Barbara)
