With day one of stroke play completed in the NCAA Championships at Eugene Country Club, Matt Lutz (+7) is tied for 138 after an opening round 77.
Lutz opened the NCAA Championship with a picture perfect drive on the first hole, which left him less 100 yards to the green. He hit his approach to about 25 feet and two putted for par.
On the 424-yard, par-4 second hole, he again drove it to a short irons distance away from the green, however his approach rolled off the back off the green into the water. Lutz would double bogey the hole, before going on a string of six straight pars on holes 3-8.
Lutz birdied the ninth to get him to +1 on the front, just four strokes off the pace. He continued to drive the ball well and found himself in the fairway on 10, he missed the green, but got up and down for par.
"I made a bad shot on 10, but was able to get up and down," said Lutz.
A bogey on the par 3 11th hole was the beginning of a five hole span (11-15) that Lutz played +6, which included a double bogey, a three putt and a four putt.
"The bogey on 11 bothered me and I just lost a focus for a few holes," said Lutz. "I know I'm playing good golf. Tomorrow I'm gonna need to go low, but I gotta take it one shot at a time.", added Lutz.
Coach Todd on Lutz's opening round, "Drove it A+, iron play was a D. If you don't hit your irons well here, it's tough to get up and down.
He hit it well enough to shoot under par today."
For the first time this season, Lutz will tee off in the afternoon, when he gets his second round underway at 2:32 pm PT.
