UC Santa Barbara tandem Palina Dubavets and Stejani Stojic rolled to victory Thursday in the first round of the NCAA Women's Doubles Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.
The nation's 22nd-ranked duo posted a convincing 6-1, 6-2 win over DePaul's Yulia Shupenia and Rebeca Mitrea. That cemented the first victory in the doubles championship by a Big West duo since former Gaucho greats Amelia White and Kelly Spencer defeated a team from Kansas State in the 1995 first round.
Dubavets and Stojic, playing in windy conditions throughout the afternoon, were tied 2-2 in the second set with their Blue Demon counterparts, then reeled off four straight games to clinch the match.
The victory sets up a round of 16 clash with the No. 1 seeded team in the tournament, Hayley Carter and Whitney Kay of North Carolina. The match takes place on Friday at 12:00 p.m. PT.
Dubavets and Stojic are bidding to become the first Big West duo to advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA doubles tournament since that same Gaucho duo – White and Spencer – got there in 1995.
