Fernandez, Rosenberg Capture Baseball Weekly Awards

Baseball weekly honors have been bestowed upon UC Riverside junior Vince Fernandez and CSUN sophomore Kenny Rosenberg.

Fernandez Sparks Highlander Offense

UC Riverside junior Vince Fernandez (Livermore, Calif./Granada HS) hit .526 with six runs scored and six RBIs to collect his second Big West Baseball Field Player of the Week honor this season.

The outfielder helped the Highlanders to a 3-1 record with three, three-hit games, and had 10 hits in 19 at-bats for the week.  Three of those hits went for extra bases.  He posted a .550 on-base percentage and .895 slugging percentage.

Fernandez, who leads the Big West in hits with 75, picked up three in four at-bats in UCR’s 8-3 victory against San Diego State on Tuesday.  He scored three times, and clubbed his seventh homer of the season, a solo shot to right in the second inning.

Moving back into conference play, Fernandez helped the Highlanders post a series victory over Cal Poly.  He laced an RBI single in UCR’s 6-4 win to open the series.

In game two, an 11-5 triumph, Fernandez went 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs.  He had an RBI single in the sixth and knocked home another run with a double in the eighth.

Fernandez posted his third, three-hit game of the week in Sunday’s 6-4 loss.  He smashed his eighth home run of the year and drove in two, increasing his RBI total to 41, which ranks No. 4 in the Big West.  He has nine RBIs in the last five games, and has five multiple-hit games in his last six.

Others nominated:
Michael Sanderson (Cal Poly); Timmy Richards (Cal State Fullerton); Brock Lundquist (Long Beach State); Adam Alcantara (UC Irvine); Ethan Lopez (Hawai‘i)

Rosenberg Fires Two-Hit Shutout Against Purdue

CSUN sophomore Kenny Rosenberg (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais HS) tossed a two-hit shutout in a road win against Purdue, garnering Big West Baseball Pitcher of the Week honors.

The southpaw became the second Matador pitcher to shutout an opponent this season, and the first to hurl a two-hitter since Calvin Copping did the same against Hawai‘i in April 2015.

Rosenberg struck out 12, the third time this year he has fanned double-digit batters in a game.  It was his first career shutout.  He gained momentum as the game went along, retiring the final 16 hitters in a row with six strikeouts over the last three innings.  Rosenberg punctuated his outing by striking out the side in the ninth.

In improving to 6-1 on the season, Rosenberg moved into a tie for 10th place in school history with 113 career strikeouts.

Others nominated: Colton Eastman (Cal State Fullerton); Tanner Brown (Long Beach State); Cameron Bishop (UC Irvine); Austin Sodders (UC Riverside); Brendan Hornung (Hawai‘i)
