UC Riverside’s Matt Lutz blasted a 6-under 66 in the opening round of the 2016 NCAA Golf Regional at The Gallery at Dove Mountain Golf Course in Marana, Ariz. to sit atop the leaderboard. Spearheaded by the sophomore from Placentia, Calif., the Highlanders currently sit sixth after carding an even-par 288.
Pacing the 14-team field is Stanford, who shot 14-under 274 and holds a nine-stroke lead over second place UAB. Oregon sits third with a 3-under 285 and is followed by Wake Forest (286) and California (287).
After recording a bogey on the first hole, Lutz maintained his composure and tallied four birdies over the next six holes. He ended the front nine with a 1-under 35 after recording a double bogey on the ninth hole. On the back nine Lutz carded an eagle and three birdies for a first round total of 66 to lead the field. Sam Gillis sits second on the team and is tied for 23 after scoring an even-par 72. Michael Wong and Andrew Spillman both shot 3-over to sit tied for 38th while Brandon Tsujimoto rounds out the five-man team with a point total of 80.
UC Santa Barbara’s Brandon Bauman, who earned a berth into the regional as an individual, shot a 3-under par 69 in the first round and will enter Tuesday’s second round in a tie for 7th-place in the field of 74. Bauman, the 2016 Big West Champion and Big West Player of the Year, was at even-par after the first 15 holes, but an eagle on the par-5, 550 yard 16th hole and a birdie on the par-4 336 yard 17th hole, moved him to 3-under. The sophomore from Las Vegas, Nev., shot a par on the 18th hole to finish at 3-under through the first 18 holes.
Also playing as an individual, Long Beach State senior Daniel Chian fired a one-under-par 71 to tie for 15th place. Chian began the regional from the par-four first tee, recording two birdies, two bogeys and five pars to finish the front-nine at even. After making the turn onto the back-nine, the Covina, Calif., native double-bogeyed the par-four 10th to go two-over. He would pick up his third birdie on the 11th and par the next five holes before finishing with two consecutive birdies on the last two holes to finish the day at one-under.
The Highlanders tee off round two at 7:20 a.m. from the first tee.
Six 54-hole regional tournaments are being conducted May 16-18 to determine the championships field. Thirteen teams and ten individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. Regional tournaments are considered preliminary rounds of NCAA championships competition and all national championships policies apply. The other five regional sites include Tuscaloosa, Ala., Kohler, Wis., Albuquerque, N.M., Stillwater, Okla., and Nashville, Tenn.
Team and individual medalist titles will be decided May 27-June 1 at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Oregon. The University of Oregon is the host institution for the 2016 championships.
