Rippy, Hyland Named Softball Weekly Award Winners

5/16/2016

Delynn Rippy and Sierra Hyland notched the final softball weekly awards of the 2016 season.

Rippy Leads Titan Offense In Series Win

Cal state Fullerton junior Delynn Rippy (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino HS) earned Big West Softball Field Player of the Week accolades as she posted three straight multi-hit games in a series victory over UC Santa Barbara.

Rippy hit .667 (6-for-9) with four runs scored and three RBIs, accounting for more than half of the 13 runs the Titans scored in the series.  She had a .700 on-base percentage and .889 slugging percentage.

The right fielder was the only Titan to record a multi-hit game as she finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI in the series-opening 3-1 win.  She drove home the eventual game-winner with a second inning RBI-single.  Rippy also scored an insurance run in the fifth and picked up her 14th stolen base of the season in the game.

Rippy roped a two-run double to give the Titans a 3-0 lead in the second game, one they ultimately would lose 4-3 due to a late UCSB comeback.  She finished 2-for-2 with a walk.

In addition to going 2-for-4 in the rubber game, a 7-1 victory, Rippy scored three times and tallied her second double of the series.  The Titans finished the regular season 17-4 in conference and champions of the Big West.

Others nominated: Stephanie Heyward (Cal Poly); Katie Hooper (CSUN); Tierra Falo (Long Beach State); Melanie Menor (UC Santa Barbara); Sarah Muzik (Hawai‘i)

Hyland Earns 11th Career Pitcher of the Week Award

Moving into a tie for fourth all-time for Big West Softball Pitcher of the Week awards, Cal Poly junior Sierra Hyland (Visalia, Calif./El Diamante HS) accumulated her 11th career honors thanks to a pair of dominant performances.

The right-hander tied Pacific’s Cindy Ball (1999-02) on the all-time citations list.  Hyland won the award six times as a freshman, once as a sophomore, and on four occasions this season.

To accomplish the feat, she had two solid efforts in the circle against UC Riverside.  With the offense providing a combined four runs of support in her two starts, Hyland allowed just one run in 17.0 innings of work.

She threw a complete game in Cal Poly’s 3-1 win to open the series.  She allowed just five hits, walked two and struck out one.

In the season finale, Hyland pitched all 10 innings of a 1-0 Mustang victory.  She did not walk a batter and fanned three while scattering seven hits.

For the week, Hyland was 2-0 with a 0.41 ERA and a .203 opponent batting average.  She completed the year with a 1.19 ERA, the fourth-lowest total in program single-season history.

Others nominated: Desiree Ybarra (Cal State Fullerton); Taylor Troost (CSUN); Christina Clermont (Long Beach State); Tayler Misfeldt (UC Riverside); Kanani Aina Cabrales (Hawai‘i)
