BIG WEST AT A GLANCE
GAUCHOS GET IT DONE
UC Santa Barbara made program history in the Big West Tournament, claiming its first-ever Big West Tournament crown at the eighth tournament since the league’s inaugural season in 2009. The Gauchos went 3-0, first taking down #6 CSUN 8-4 and #2 UC Irvine in a thrilling 7-6 sudden victory to clinch the semifinal win. UCSB then defeated defending tournament champion, #4 Hawai‘i, in a domineering 11-5 finish. With the win, the Gauchos earned their first trip to the NCAA Tournament.
NCAA TOURNAMENT BOUND
UCSB heads to Los Angeles for the NCAA women’s water polo tournament May 13-15. The Gauchos will face No. 2 Stanford Friday afternoon at 1:45 pm PT to open Tournament action.
BEACH MAKES REGULAR SEASON HISTORY
Long Beach State made history of its own after wrapping up the regular season with a 4-1 mark in league to earn its first-ever Big West women’s water polo regular season title.
UC Santa Barbara will take a No. 7 ranking into the NCAA Tournament, a mark that ties its season-best in the national poll. The Gauchos will face the two-time defending national champion to whom they fell 16-5 earlier in the year, however since that defeat, UCSB has gone 6-2. The Gauchos have also held the opposition to an average of 5.2 goals scored during that stretch.
Big West Overall Tournament Record: 8-10
Best finish: 4th place (2012-UCI, 2013-UH)
