Hawaii's Spieler Wins NCAA Elite 90 Award

5/6/2016

Senior University of Hawai'i beach volleyball student-athlete Katie Spieler was recognized as the recipient of the Elite 90 Award for the 2016 NCAA Division I Beach Volleyball Championship.

The Elite 90 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's 90 championships. Spieler holds a 4.00 grade-point average as a post-graduate Accounting major in the prestigious Shidler College of Business. She completed her undergraduate studies in Accounting in only three years, graduating Summa Cum Laude after finishing with a perfect 4.00 GPA. She was also recently awarded UH's Jack Bonham Award, presented to the top senior female student-athlete.

Spieler was honored with the award Thursday evening at the NCAA Beach Volleyball Championships Banquet at the The Hangout in Gulf Shores.

"I'm extremely proud of Katie and this award," head coach Jeff Hall said. "She is very deserving of this honor and is everything you ask for in a student-athlete. She is such a key component in this program and we're so proud of how she represents Hawai'i beach volleyball."

Spieler, a 2014 AVCA All-America, was one half of the Big West Pairs Team of the Year, with partnerEmily Maglio. The pair led the Rainbow Wahine to the inaugural Big West Beach Volleyball Championship and to a No. 5 seed in this week's first-ever NCAA Championship tournament.

Sporting a 102-41career record heading into NCAAs, Spieler is the all-time program wins leader and the program dual wins leader.

The Elite 90 Award is in its seventh year, but was previously known as the Elite 89, which changed with the addition of beach volleyball to the championship lineup. The Award was instituted to recognize the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers.

Spieler is Hawai'i's fourth winner of the Elite Award, along with previous recipients Taylor Molde (water polo, 2015) Amarens Genee (water polo, 2013) and Stephanie Brandt (women's volleyball, 2009).

No.5 seed Hawai'i takes on fourth-seeded UCLA in the NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship first round on Friday, May 6 at 10:00 a.m. CT (5:00 a.m. HT). Action on all courts during the match will be streamed live on NCAA.com.
