HAWAI‘I MAKES HEADLINES
Hawai‘i claimed the inaugural Big West women’s beach volleyball championship in Huntington Beach, Calif. after going 3-0 in the tournament to claim the crown. The Rainbow Wahine opened tournament action with a 5-0 sweep of Cal Poly and advanced to the second day of the championship. UH then defeated Long Beach State 3-2 for a right to play in the title match, then came out victorious over the 49ers again in a 3-2 finish winning at the 1, 2 and 4 positions. Two of the victories came from straight-set wins.
NCAA TOURNAMENT BOUND
The NCAA Selection Committee selected three teams from the East region, three teams from the West region and two teams at large. There were no automatic qualifiers. The Rainbow Wahine received an at-large selection as announced by the committee Sunday evening. The SandBows will face No. 4 UCLA, Sunday. The Rainbow Wahine dropped both regular season matchups with the Bruins in tight 3-2 fashion.
While 2016 marks the first year beach volleyball is an NCAA sport, UH has made appearances in Gulf Shores at the AVCA Championships in three of the last four seasons playing in pairs pool play in 2012 and 2015 and both team championships and pairs play in 2014 and 2015.
