Season and Lifetime Bests Set By Weekly Award Winners

5/3/2016

All four track and field recipients of the Athlete of the Week awards set either season or lifetime bests during competition at a variety of meets.

UC Irvine junior Lloyd Sicard (Gardena, Calif./Serra HS) recorded a season-best time in the 110-meter hurdles to earn his second Big West Men’s Track Athlete of the Week honor this season.  At the adidas/Steve Scott Invitational Saturday, Sicard finished in 13.70 seconds to place first among collegians and third overall.  His 110 hurdles time ranks No. 1 in the Big West, sixth in the West Region and No. 14 nationally.  In addition, Sicard contributed on both relay teams, helping the 4x100 finish first in 41.14 seconds and the 4x400 second with a season-best  time of 3:11.12.  Sicard rank an anchor leg of 47.7 to help the Anteaters post their top mark of the year.

UC Riverside junior Faith Makau (Modesto, Calif./James Enochs HS) garnered Big West Women’s Track Athlete of the Week accolades for her work at the Payton Jordan Invitational hosted by Stanford.  The top Highlander middle distance runner posted solid performances in the 800-meter and 1,500-meter runs.  Her time of 2:07.81 in the 800m represented a seasonal best by more than two seconds, and is the top mark in the Big West this year by nearly two seconds.  Her mark places her 34th in the West Region.  Makau also ran a 4:23.42 in the 1,500m, which trailed her season-best time of 4:22.18 at the Mt. SAC Relays, by just over a second.  Makau ranks second in the Big West in the 1,500m.

Throwing a lifetime-best in the hammer, junior James Hubbard (Auburn, Calif./American River College) became the fourth different Long Beach State representative to capture Big West Men’s Field Athlete of the Week acclaim this season.  He tossed the hammer 207-07 (63.27m) at the adidas/Steve Scott Invitational to finish second among collegiate performers and third overall.  Two days later, he
returned to action at the Payton Jordan Invitational and unleashed another throw over 200 feet in the hammer, posting a 200-05 for fifth place overall, third among collegians.

Long Beach State senior Fatima Vergara (Corona, Calif./Riverside CC) notched a lifetime-best in her signature event, the hammer throw, to secure Big West Women’s Field Athlete of the Week honors.  Her toss of 196-02 at the Payton Jordan Invitational moved her into first place in the Big West by two inches.  She finished in fourth overall, and third among collegians.  The mark also places her No. 21 in the West Region and No. 40 in the nation, while moving her to second all-time at LBSU.  She uncorked a 189-07 in the same event at the adidas/Steve Scott Invitational for fifth place overall and second among collegiate performers.  At the Payton Jordan Invite, Vergara also competed in the shot put (47-01) and discus (152-09).
