UCSB Leads Both Team And Individual Race For Men's Golf Title

A 1-under-par first round score of 287 has awarded UC Santa Barbara the top spot on the leaderboard after day one of the 2016 Big West Conference Men’s Golf Championship at the Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley, Calif.
The Gauchos were the lone team to fire an under-par team total and currently own a five-stroke lead over second place UC Davis, who shot 292. Cal Poly is third with a 293 point total and is followed by Cal State Fullerton, CSUN and UC Riverside, who are log-jammed in fourth place with a six-over 294. Long Beach State finds itself in seventh after carding 295, while UC Irvine shot 301 to land in the eighth spot. Hawai’i rounds out the nine-team field with a score of 307.
Fueled by seven birdies, UC Santa Barbara’s Zach Smith blasted an impressive 3-under 69 in the first round of the Big West Championship to sit atop of the standings. One stroke back and tied for second are Hawai’i’s Cameron Kaneko, Cal Poly’s Jimmy Castles and UC Riverside’s Brandon Tsujimoto. There is also a two-way tie for fifth place between CSUN’s Tim Snyder and UC Davis’ Ryan Knop, who both fired 1-under 71.
Second round of play begins Tuesday, May 3 at 7:25 a.m. from both the first and 10th tees. Live scoring can be found at www.golfstat.com and admission to the event is free.
The winning team advances to the NCAA Division I men’s regionals which are held at six sites this year from May 16-18. This year’s regional sites include Tuscaloosa, Ala., Tucson, Ariz., Kohler, Wis., Albuquerque, N.M., Stillwater, Okla., and Nashville, Tenn. The six-day NCAA Men’s Golf Championship is scheduled for May 27-June 1 at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore.
