Coach Maureen Cole on prospect of back-to-back titles:
"To defend a title is awesome and at the same time this is a completely new team. We’ve talked a lot about the past this year, the history and where we come from, so this group really appreciates what all of the girls have done before.
They’ll be out to defend.”

UC Santa Barbara's Road to RAISING THE CUP

For just the second time in program history, UC Santa Barbara will play in the Tournament title game, Sunday afternoon.  Looking for their first-ever championship crown, UCSB will get to compete in front of their home crowd as the Gauchos try to make history at Campus Pool.

UCSB has a date with destiny.  The Gauchos have fought their way to the title game after an 8-4 victory over CSUN in the quarterfinals before a thrilling SV finish Saturday afternoon in the semifinals.  Overtime heroics from senior Samantha Murphy catapulted the Gauchos to their first championship match since the first Big West Tournament back in 2009.  The 7-6 final would come in the second SV period.

Coach Serela Kay on semifinal finish:

I have to give Samantha Murphy a big shout-out. She sprints for the ball, she always wins. Going into overtime and sudden death, that’s always nice because we always have that first look. This was a huge team effort across the board.

I have to give a shoutout to Mackenzie Brokaw, she had a great game. There were a few when she had two handed pull downs and you don’t see that often.  I’m really proud of the team and excited for tomorrow. Now we face the defending champions.  [I'm] excited for the feeling of winning it here in Santa Barbara, similar to what Hawai‘i did last year.

"This is the position we’ve been looking to put ourselves in."
