For the first time in Big West history, the conference sponsored women's beach volleyball after the NCAA named it an official sport for the 2015-16 season. Beach volleyball became the conference's 17th-sponsored sport.
With four Big West institutions sponsoring beach volleyball in CSUN, Cal Poly, UC Santa Barbara and Hawai'i, the league welcomed CSU Bakersfield and Sacramento State as associate members in beach.
Friday marked day one of the first-ever conference tournament and it saw four teams advance to day two: #1 Hawai'i, #2 Long Beach State, #3 CSUN and #5 Cal Poly.
The Mustangs made league history, recording the first tournament win in Huntington Beach after a 3-2 victory over CSU Bakersfield.
Hawai'i then swept the Mustangs 5-0 to secure a spot in Saturday's action, but Cal Poly would avoid elimination after sending Sacramento State home in a 4-1 W.
CSUN recorded the first victory over the Hornets earlier in the day before Long Beach State swept the Matadors, 5-0. With the sweep the Beach advanced to day two of the conference tournament.
The Matadors then earned the final spot on Saturday with a 3-2 win over the roadrunners, eliminating CSUB from the competition.
With Saturday's play to kickoff at 9 am, fans will get a treat as the conference's two nationally ranked teams will go head-to-head to open day two.
Following the UH versus LBSU showdown, CP will then take on CSUN at 10:30 am. With four teams remaining, it will either be a Rainbow Wahine, a 49er, a Matador or a Mustang raising the cup on the sand Saturday afternoon.
