Cal Poly Edges UC Davis In Intense Battle

Cal Poly – UC Davis MT Box Score

In a three hour battle, No. 2 seed Cal Poly outlasted No. 3 seed UC Davis, 4-2, in the semifinals of the Big West Men's Tennis Championship Thursday at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.  Four of the six singles matches lasted three sets in a back-and-forth affair.

The Mustangs seek their third Big West tournament title in five years when they take the courts against top-seed UC Santa Barbara on Saturday at 9:00 a.m.  This is Cal Poly's fifth appearance in a tournament final overall.

The clash came down to singles courts No. 1 and No. 2 where three-set marathons were being waged.  Cal Poly junior Garrett Auproux collected the clinching point at No. 2 when he defeated Aggie junior James Wade, 6-3, 6-7 (6), 7-5.  On the adjacent court at No. 1, Ben Donovan and Alec Adamson were locked in a similar battle.  Donovan held a slim 6-4, 4-6, 6-5 lead at the time the match ended and it was discontinued.

Prior to that, Everett Maltby had tied the match at 2-2 as the Aggie overcame a first-set deficit to edge Axel Damiens at No. 5, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.  But Sreyas Kolachalam responded with a three-set victory of his own, knocking off Tommy Lam in a 6-0, 3-6, 7-5 final at No. 6.  That gave the Mustangs a 3-2 lead and set up the heroics from Auproux on the No. 2 court.

The match began with the Mustangs winning a critical doubles point.  Cal Poly and UC Davis split at No. 2 and No. 3, and the point came down to No. 1 between the two foes.  Donovan and Corey Pang stepped up to beat Adamson and Adam Levie in a tight 6-4 contest.

Junior Bryce Kelvie knotted the match at 1-1 with a 6-2, 6-3 win for the Aggies at No. 4.  Pang handed the lead back to the Mustangs with his 6-4, 6-1 triumph at No. 3.  The two teams then engaged in three-set frays at the other four positions.

Cal Poly improved to 14-9 on the season.  The Mustangs look to avenge a 5-2 loss on their own home court to UCSB that clinched the regular season crown for the Gauchos on April 23.
