Long Beach State sophomore Emily Garczynski (Palm Desert, Calif./Palm Desert HS) tallied a pair of hat tricks in an exciting final weekend that culminated in the program’s first conference championship, earning her Big West Women’s Water Polo Player of the Week accolades.
The center scored three goals apiece in road contests against No. 8 UC Irvine and No. 7 UC Santa Barbara. Garcyznski’s offense aided the Beach in a 7-6 victory over the Gauchos in a winner-take-all showdown for the Big West title. All three goals came at important junctures – she scored the tying goal, go-ahead and the game-winner. After trailing the Gauchos by two, Garczynski scored a perimeter goal with over a minute to go in the third to tie the game at five.
Garczynski struck again with 2:49 left in the fourth quarter to give LBSU its first lead of the match. With the game tied at 6-all, Garczynski’s notched a dramatic goal from the perimeter as it went right into the net at the buzzer.
She scored three goals in 11-10 loss to UCI, tying for the team-high honors. She scored all three goals in the second half as the Beach rallied in an attempt to tie the match. She cashed in from the perimeter to pull the Beach within 7-6, while she sank a penalty shot to trim UCI’s lead to 10-9 with just under three minutes to go. Garczynski registered another penalty shot goal with 30 seconds to go.
She has now scored a career-high 29 goals heading into the Big West Tournament.
