More Personal Bests Set By Track And Field Honorees
The weekly winners of the Big West Track and Field Athlete of the Week awards reeled off personal best performances.
UC Santa Barbara senior Shyan Vaziri (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch HS) excelled in a talent packed field of 1,500m runners to capture Big West Men’s Track Athlete of the Week honors. He placed fourth overall in the race at the Mt. SAC Relays, finishing in 3:42.50 and just two seconds off of the pace by race winner David Torrence, a 3:52.01 professional miler. Vaziri’s time also represented a season-best as he outdueled some of the top collegiate talent in the country.
Gaucho teammate Tori Tsolis (San Jose, Calif./Presentation HS) toppled an 11-year old school record in the 1,500m for Big West Women’s Track Athlete of the Week acclaim. The senior became the first Gaucho to break the 4:20 barrier in the event, finishing in 4:19.02 and breaking the record previously set in 2005 by Lauren Christman. In addition, the time ranked No. 1 in the Big West and No. 17 in the West Region, against a marquee field that included Nicole Sifuentes, a Canadian professional with a 4:04.65 mark in the event.
Cal Poly senior Devin Bennett (Renton, Wash./Liberty HS) impressed in the decathlon to earn Big West Men’s Field Athlete of the Week honors. He notched a career-best score of 7,118 points at the California Combined Events Invitational at Azusa Pacific’s Cougar Stadium. It was the second time this season he recorded a score over 7,000 and represented the No. 5 mark in school history. He had a PR in the 1,500m with a time of 4:21.10. Bennett’s mark ranks No. 2 in the Big West this year.
Hawai‘i junior Felicianna Vazquez (Wai’anae, O’ahu/Radford HS) garnered the Big West Women’s Field Athlete of the Week award as she won the javelin with a personal-best mark of 163-2 (49.74m) at the Pacific Coast Invitational. She improved upon her previous best of 145-9 as she vaulted to No. 2 on the all-time UH list. She rose to the top of the Big West with that performance, while also ranking No. 14 in the West Region and No. 24 nationally.
