Desiree Gillaspy is pacing Cal Poly as the Mustangs look to capture their first Big West Championship.

Firing a second round score of 310, for a two-day total of 615, the Cal Poly Mustangs maintain a three-stroke lead over second place UC Riverside (308-310=618) at the 2016 Big West Women’s Golf Championship at The Bay Course in Kapalua, Hawai’i.  Long Beach State, who entered the day in a three-way tie for second, sits third with a two-round score 622.

Host Hawai’i fired the low round score of the tournament thus far with a 19-over 307 and holds steady in the fourth slot.  The six-time defending champion UC Davis Aggies struggled on day two and carded 316 to drop from a tie for second to fifth place with a 36-hole score of 624. CSUN bettered its first round score by two strokes to secure the sixth slot with a total of 634 and Cal State Fullerton (644) and UC Irvine (664) round out the eight-team field.

Individually, the top two players flip-flopped as Kassidy Teare took a two stroke lead over UC Davis’ Paige Lee, who entered the second round with a two-stroke lead over Teare.  Fueled by four birdies, Teare fired a 1-over 73 on day two for a two-round score of 147.  Lee is second with a total of 149 and UC Riverside’s Paris Griffith is one stroke back in third.

The Mustangs, who have never won a Big West women’s golf title, secured three spots in the top 10, along with UC Riverside and Hawai’i.  Leading the way for Cal Poly is Desiree Gillaspy, who owns the fourth spot after carding 151 (74-77).

Final round of the three-day event tees off at 10:30 a.m. (Pacific) with Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine.   Awards will be presented following the final round approximately at 5:30 p.m. Live scoring can be found at and admission to the event is free.
