Cal Poly Leads Big West Championship After Day One

The Mustangs of Cal Poly fired a 17-over-par 305 in the first round of the 2016 Big West Women’s Golf Championship at The Bay Course in Kapalua, Hawai’i, to lead the eight-team field.  There’s a three-way tie for second place as defending champion UC Davis, Long Beach State and UC Riverside carded 308 for their first round scores.

Host Hawai’i finished day one fifth after shooting 316 and is followed by CSUN in sixth with a 318 total.  Cal State Fullerton holds the seventh spot with a score of 324 while UC Irvine rounds out the field with a mark of 329.

The 2015 Big West Women’s Golf Player of the Year, Paige Lee from UC Davis, blasted an even-par 72 to own the top spot of the leaderboard.  Long Beach State’s Haley Tygret sits one stroke back in second place after carding 1-over 73. Long Beach State’s Kassidy Teare, UC Riverside’s Paris Griffith and Cal Poly’s Desiree Gillaspy share the third slot with a first round score of 74.  In all, the top four teams after day one placed two players each in the top 10.

Round two of the three-day event tees off at 10:30 a.m. (Pacific) with Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine.  Live scoring can be found at www.golfstat.com and admission to the event is free.

The winning team advances to the NCAA Division I women’s regionals which are held at four sites this year from May 5-7. This year’s regional sites include Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto, Calif.; Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas; University Club in Baton Rouge, La.; Shoal Creek at Shoal Creek, Ala. The six-day NCAA Women’s Golf Championship is scheduled for May 20-25 at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore.
