Big West Challenge Participants Earn Weekly Track & Field Honors
A couple of records and several first-place finishes led to Big West Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors for performers from Long Beach State, UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara.
UC Irvine junior Lloyd Sicard (Gardena, Calif./Serra HS) broke his own meet record at the 24th annual Big West Challenge to earn Big West Men's Track Athlete of the Week accolades. Sicard finished the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 13.84 seconds on Friday at the Titan Track Complex. He eclipsed the previous record of 13.92 he had set in 2015. His 110 hurdles time ranks No. 1 in the Big West, eighth in the West Region and 20th nationally.
Long Beach State junior Riley Cooks (Coarsegold, Calif./Cuesta College) picked up three first-place finishes at the Big West Challenge to wrap up Big West Women's Track Athlete of the Week honors. Cooks, who was named Field Athlete of the Week two weeks ago, won twice individually to pace the Beach. She ran 24.01 in the 200-meters to defeat the conference leader on her own home turf in a lifetime-best performance. Cooks then crossed the line in 13.93 to win the 100-meter hurdles. To close out her big day, she anchored the 4x100 relay team to victory, with the time of 45.84 the best for LBSU this spring. Cooks also posted a fifth-place finish in the javelin (132-4).
Willie Alexander (Fresno, Calif./Central HS) continued his strangehold in the jumps landscape, commanding the long jump and triple jump events for Big West Men's Field Athlete of the Week recognition. He played a large role in Long Beach State's ninth straight Big West Challenge team title, winning the long jump with a mark of 24-09.50 and the triple jump in 47-03.50. It was Alexander's third consecutive long jump victory this season. In addition, he picked up points for the Beach as a participant in the season-best 4x100 relay time (40.98) for first place. Alexander also notched a second place finish in the 100-meters (10.90) and came in eighth in the 200-meters (23.07).
UC Santa Barbara senior Melissa Rake (San Dimas, Calif./St. Lucy's Priory HS) unleashed a school record throw in the javelin to collect Big West Women's Field Athlete of the Week acclaim. Trailing the leader going into the third round, Rake connected on a line drive shot that traveled 160-01, breaking her own school record of 154-01 set in 2015. The 160-01 effort ranks No. 1 in the Big West and No. 14 in the West Region.
