Pham, Dubavets Earn Tennis Weekly Honors
UC Irvine senior Tyler Pham and UC Santa Barbara sophomore Palina Dubavets notched this week's tennis awards in helping lead their teams to impressive victories.
Pham Helps UC Irvine to 2-0 Big West Start
UC Irvine senior Tyler Pham put forth two dominant performances in singles that earned him his third Big West Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week honor.
Pham, who owns a six-match win streak in singles, helped UCI start out 2-0 in Big West play with victories over Hawai‘i and UC Riverside in Honolulu.
He lost a combined total of three games in a pair of straight set victories, dispatching UH’s Ruben Blattner (6-1, 6-0) and UCR’s Sean Robles (6-1, 6-1). The wins improved his dual singles record to 11-5. Pham also paired with Jonathan Hammel at No. 1 doubles to earn a 6-2 victory over the Highlander tandem of Julian Ruffin and Sean Robles.
Others nominated: Corey Pang (Cal Poly); Anderson Ju (UC Riverside); Cody Rakela (UC Santa Barbara)
Dubavets Keys Upset of No. 24 Fresno State
Two-time Big West Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week winner Palina Dubavets helped UC Santa Barbara take down No. 24 Fresno State while going undefeated in singles and doubles.
The Gauchos posted their most impressive victory of 2016 against Fresno State, and Dubavets was key to that success. She romped to a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles against Sophie Watts. With partner Stefani Stojic, she then knocked off the nation’s No. 20-ranked doubles team of Mayar and Rana Sherif Ahmed. Dubavets and Stojic jumped from No. 19 to No. 11 in the national rankings after that win.
Dubavets also earned a three-set win over Marie Klocker of San Jose State (4-6, 7-6, 10-6) and a sweep of Boise State’s Bobbi Oshiro (6-2, 6-1) as UCSB went 3-0.
