New school marks and standout performances catapult this week's crop of Athletes of the Week with representatives from Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State and UC Riverside.Cal State Fullerton freshman Thaddeus Smith (Duarte, Calif./Damien HS) set a new school mark in the 200-meter dash to claim the Big West Men’s Track Athlete of the Week honors.  He shattered the previous CSF record and registered a time of 20.92 that bested the mark set last season by 0.27 seconds.  The freshman’s performance placed second at the USC Trojan Invitational while his time ranks best in the Big West and fifth in the NCAA.  Smith also ran a leg in the 4x400-meter relay that set a new standard for the Titans – the quartet ran a time of 3:09.67 to break a 14-year old record set at 3:10.46 in 2002.  Additionally, the first year contributed to the 4x100-meter relay and ran the second leg in 40.40 for a second place team finish in the event.
Long Beach State’s Courtne’ Davis (Riverside, Calif./Eleanor Roosevelt HS) registered a top Big West time in the 100-meter dash to earn Big West Women’s Track Athlete of the Week accolades.  The freshman competed at the USC Trojan Invitational and brought home second place in the 100-meter with a time of 11.72, a top mark in the Big West and 11th-best regionally.  The mark is also the fastest time of any 100-meter runner at Long Beach since 2008 and the time earned her No. 4 all-time for the 49ers.  With a seasonal-best in the 100-meter dash, her 24.72 time in the 200-meter race registered an eighth-place mark at the Invitational and a sixth-best time in league.
For the second-straight week, senior Willie Alexander of Long Beach State (Fresno, Calif./Central HS) received Big West Men’s Field Athlete of the Week honors after breaking a 20-year old school record in the long jump on his way to winning the USC Trojan Invitational.  The senior topped the LBSU all-time mark with a personal-record at 7.98-meters that won the event at the Invitational by over a foot.  Alexander’s mark also registers as the NCAA-best in 2016.  The 49er set a new personal-best in the event by 4’ 12” and improved his seasonal-best by 1’3 1/2”.
UC Riverside’s Tayler Fleming (Perris, Calif./Martin Luther King HS) earned back-to-back Athlete of the Week honors, however this week the sophomore received Women’s Field Athlete of the Week accolades.  At the Arizona State Baldy Castillo Invitational, Fleming placed third with 5.98-meters. The mark ranks 11th-best in the nation and tops the Big West.
