Hiura, Uelmen Receive Weekly Awards
Keston Hiura and Erich Uelmen had standout performances last week to nab Big West Field Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week awards.
Hiura Helps UC Irvine to Series Sweep
UC Irvine sophomore Keston Hiura (Valencia, Calif./Valencia HS) went 7-15 at the plate in Irvine’s four games this week to earn his third Big West Baseball Field Player of the Week honor of his career and his first this season.
The outfielder, who has recorded a hit in 10-straight games this year, led the Anteaters to an unbeaten week as UCI improved to 14-6 overall, with wins in its last five contests. The sophomore crossed the plate five times and drove in four scores to contribute to nine of Irvine’s 24 runs versus Maryland and Seattle three times.
With a three-hit performance Sunday versus the Redhawks, Hiura’s two-run single in the eighth frame sparked the ‘Eaters’ six-run inning for the 8-4 win and the series sweep. Also on Sunday, the sophomore tallied his fifth assist and added a pair of runs. After recording a pair of two-stolen base games, the outfielder now has five on the year with 20 RBI.
Batting above .500 in two of UCI’s outings last week, Hiura leads the Big West with a .467 average.
Others nominated: Timmy Richards (Cal State Fullerton), Yusuke Akitoshi (CSUN), Vince Fernandez (UC Riverside), Michael McAdoo (UC Santa Barbara), Marcus Doi (Hawai‘i)
Uelmen Shuts Down Hornets
Cal Poly sophomore Erich Uelmen (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran HS) picked up his second complete game and received his first-ever Big West Baseball Pitcher of the Week accolade. This is Cal Poly’s first in the category in 2016.
The right-hander threw a five-hit shutout at Sacramento State in Saturday’s second game of a doubleheader to help the Mustangs to a 4-0 win. With six strikeouts, Uelmen recorded his second-highest strikeout total on the year in an outing.
On the bump, Uelmen retired the first 10 batters of the game and 14 of the first 15 while only one Hornet reached second base over duration of the contest. No Sacramento runner advanced to third and the righty retired the side in order five times.
The sophomore is now 3-0 on the year and his win Saturday clinched the series for Cal Poly.
