Lombardi, Ybarra Excel at Louisville Slugger Invitational


Julia Lombardi and Desiree Ybarra starred for their respective squads at the Louisville Slugger Invitational, and were honored by the Big West Conference for their efforts.

Lombardi Hits .533 at Louisville Slugger Invitational

Long Beach State first baseman Julia Lombardi (Stevenson Ranch, Calif./West Ranch HS) hit .533 to help her team to a 4-1 record at the Louisville Slugger Invitational, earning the Big West Softball Field Player of the Week award.

The sophomore had hits in four of the five games, including three with multiple hits, and smacked a pair of doubles to finish the week with a .667 slugging percentage.

Lombardi started the tournament with a 3-for-3 effort, scoring once and driving in two to lead the Beach to a 9-0 shutout of Utah Valley.

She collected two more hits against Mississippi State in a 5-1 victory and added an RBI double in a narrow 5-4 decision over Iowa State.

In the tourney finale, a 5-4 win over Princeton, she gunned down the tying runner at the plate for the final out of the game on a 5-3-2 double play.  She also provided solid offense, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI.

Ybarra Posts Pair of Wins at Louisville Slugger Invite

Cal State Fullerton senior Desiree Ybarra (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly HS) did not allow an earned run over four appearances and 15.1 innings of work, as she garnered Big West Softball Pitcher of the Week honors.

The southpaw dominated Mississippi State in a 2-0 shutout on Saturday.  She went the distance and yielded just four hits, walking three and striking out three in her first start of the Louisville Slugger Invitational.

Ybarra picked up her second victory of the tournament in Sunday’s 2-1 triumph over Iowa State.  She tossed 5.2 innings of scoreless ball, scattering two hits with no walks and four strikeouts.

Ybarra also made a pair of relief appearances with three more strikeouts.
